How many times have you sinned since you received Jesus as your personal Savior? This is an impossible question to answer. The harsh reality is that every single person sins—yes, including Christians.

All transgression, before or after salvation, stems from the desire to have our needs met apart from God. Whenever we take matters into our own hands and operate outside of His will, we are headed down a sad, sinful road.

Faith in Christ brings many things—a new relationship with God, a new spirit, a new outlook on life—but it doesn’t eradicate all traces of our old life. We still have the same body and the same mind, which can lead to some of the same difficulties.

Why do we still sin after salvation? It is because old “programming” directs our thinking in certain patterns, which leads us into trouble. War has been declared in our lives, as our “flesh” struggles against the new life brought about by Christ. If we do not make a commitment to retrain our minds, we can expect a lifetime of trouble.

Scripture offers the remedy for this ongoing conflict: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Rom. 12:2). That is to say, we must intentionally fill our minds with the things of God, allowing Him to realign our thoughts.

Where are your thoughts taking you today? Are you grounding your thinking in Scripture, or does your thinking simply lead you aimlessly through life? That way leads to sin. Begin now to focus your mind on the Lord.

“Set your minds and keep them set on what is above, the higher things, not on the things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:2).

Faith is simply seeing what God sees. It’s choosing God’s way, even when things look differently in the natural. When you set your thoughts on higher things, you are looking at life through your eyes of faith and seeing what God sees. For example, you may have a financial need today, but when you look higher, you see God’s promise to supply all your needs according to His riches in glory. You may have sickness in your body today, but when you look higher, you see that Jesus paid for your sickness and diseases. You may feel lonely today, but when you look higher, you see that God has promised to never leave you nor forsake you. As you study the Word of God, you are setting your thoughts on higher things. As you set your thoughts on higher things, your faith will become stronger, and you will begin to see those things become reality in your life. You’ll see God’s hand of blessing, and you will live the abundant life He has prepared for you.

We serve such a generous and loving God. He loves you so much that there isn’t anything He wouldn’t do in order to have a relationship with you. The Bible tells us that sin separates man from God, but God doesn’t want to be separated from any of us. That’s why He sent Jesus into the world — to pay the penalty for sin so that we could live in eternity with Him.

So many people today think they have to earn their way to heaven. They think they have to be “good enough” or “do the right thing” in order to be accepted by God. They want to “clean up” before they come to Him. But the Bible says — salvation is a gift from God. You can’t earn a gift. You don’t pay for it. You can only receive it by faith and say thank You. If you’ve never received Jesus as the Lord of your life, there’s no better time to receive this free gift. Let Him fill you with His peace and joy both now and throughout eternity.

A Prayer for Today

Father, I come to You today giving You all that I am. Thank You for the gift of salvation through Your Son. Jesus, I believe You died and rose for me, and I invite You now to be the Lord of every area of my life in Jesus’ name. Amen.

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. (Genesis 50:20)

These are the words spoken by Joseph to his brothers, years after they threw him in a well and left him for dead, then decided it would be better to sell him into slavery. God took Joseph on quite a journey; from slavery to the palace to prison, and back to the palace, where he landed a position as second in command to Pharaoh and in charge of the whole land of Egypt. Certainly, Joseph’s brothers intended to harm him, but the sovereign God never wastes our time.
.Did you hear that? God never wastes our time.

It may seem like it now as you live between jobs wondering how in the world you will be able to pay the bills…

It may seem like it now as you wait for God to bring the right mate into your life…

It may seem like it now as you recover from another round of chemo…

It may seem like it now as you live in the consequences of your sin…

It may seem like it now as you do your best to get through the day with your broken heart…

It may seem like it now as you recover from the death of a dream…

It may seem like it now as your life has seemingly been placed on hold…

But…the Sovereign, Almighty, All-Powerful God never wastes our time.

So hang in there! God is using every minute (every nano-second) to mold you into the person he needs you to be for the next leg of the journey. God is at work…He loves you with an unconditional love…He has given you an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade…He has purchased you with the precious blood of his Son. He has eternity invested in you! Ask him what he wants you to learn and how he wants you to respond to today’s assignment. He is not wasting your time.

Father, for those who feel like they are stuck and their life is on hold…for those reeling from a difficult relationship or circumstance…please encourage them today with some tangible evidence that you are not wasting their time. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
